Surfing in Bali: When and Where to Ride The Waves in Paradise

stephanie • July 6, 2023

Bali, often referred to as the Island of the Gods, offers more than just picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage. This tropical paradise is a haven for surf enthusiasts, attracting wave riders from around the globe with its perfect swells and stunning spots for surfing. In this guide, we’ll reveal when to hit the waters and where to find the best waves in Bali.

Catching the Perfect Wave: Best Time to Surf

In Bali, you can surf all year round, but the conditions vary depending on the time of year and the coastline you choose.

The dry season, from May to September, brings in the big swells, making it the ideal time for experienced surfers. The wind typically blows from the east, resulting in the western coastline—home to famous spots like Uluwatu and Canggu—providing the best conditions.

The wet season, running from October to April, tends to see smaller waves and is well-suited for beginners and intermediates. During this time, the eastern coastline shines with spots like Keramas and Nusa Dua offering great conditions.

Riding High in Uluwatu

Uluwatu, at the southwestern tip of the Bukit Peninsula, is arguably Bali’s most iconic surf spot. This location is famous for its consistent swells, making it a mecca for skilled surfers. The cliff-framed beaches and ancient temples add to the area’s allure.

Hanging Ten in Canggu

Canggu is the perfect destination for surfers of all levels, boasting a good mix of beach breaks and reef breaks. Beginners can try their luck at Batu Bolong Beach, while more experienced surfers might prefer the challenging waves at Echo Beach.

Tackling the Waves at Padang Padang

Padang Padang, often referred to as the Balinese Pipeline, is renowned for its powerful swells and hollow tubes. While the right reef break is for experts only, the left side offers a softer sandy break perfect for beginners.

Surf’s Up at Keramas

On the east coast, Keramas is a top choice for its high-performance right-hand reef break. Best tackled at high tide, this surf spot is preferred by advanced surfers and even hosts international surf competitions.

Whether you’re an experienced surfer searching for the perfect wave or a beginner eager to ride your first break, Bali has a surf spot for you. Just remember to respect the ocean, adhere to etiquette of surfing, and most importantly, enjoy the ride. Bali’s waves are waiting for you!
